Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set, U-joint removal tool or hammer, grease gun, torque wrench, safety glasses, gloves.
  • Safety Warnings: Disconnect the battery before working on electrical systems. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and secured with jack stands.
2. Remove Driveshaft
  1. Lift the Vehicle: Use a hydraulic jack to lift the rear of the Mustang and secure it on jack stands.
  2. Disconnect Battery: Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent electrical issues.
  3. Remove Bolts: Using the appropriate socket, remove the bolts securing the driveshaft to the rear differential and the transmission.
  4. Slide Driveshaft Out: Carefully slide the driveshaft out of the transmission and rear differential while being mindful of the U-joint.
3. Remove Faulty U-Joint
  1. Secure Driveshaft: Place the driveshaft in a vice or on a workbench.
  2. Remove Snap Rings: Use snap ring pliers to remove the retaining clips on both ends of the U-joint.
  3. Press Out U-Joint: Using a U-joint removal tool or hammer, press out the U-joint from the driveshaft. Ensure to do this evenly to avoid damage.
  4. Clean Joints: Clean the U-joint seats in the driveshaft with a wire brush to ensure a proper fit for the new joint.
4. Install New U-Joint
  1. Lubricate New U-Joint: Apply grease to the new U-joint's bearing cups.
  2. Press in New U-Joint: Align the new U-joint with the driveshaft and press it into place. Ensure it's seated evenly.
  3. Install Snap Rings: Reinstall the snap rings onto both ends of the U-joint to secure it in place.
5. Reinstall Driveshaft
  1. Position Driveshaft: Align the driveshaft back into the transmission and rear differential.
  2. Reattach Bolts: Hand-tighten the bolts securing the driveshaft to the transmission and rear differential before fully tightening.
  3. Torque Bolts: Using a torque wrench, tighten the bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque settings.
  4. Reconnect Battery: Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
