Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Tools Required: Spark plug socket, ratchet, torque wrench, dielectric grease, anti-seize compound.
  • Ensure the engine is cool before starting the inspection.
2. Remove Ignition Coils
  • Disconnect the electrical connector from each ignition coil.
  • Remove the bolts securing the ignition coils using a socket.
  • Carefully pull each ignition coil straight out of the cylinder head.
3. Remove Spark Plugs
  • Use a spark plug socket to carefully unscrew each spark plug from the cylinder head.
  • Inspect the spark plugs for any signs of abnormal wear, such as:
    • Excessive carbon buildup
    • Burn marks
    • Erosion on the electrode
  • Note the condition of each spark plug for replacement or reinstallation.
4. Install New or Cleaned Spark Plugs
  • If replacing, apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new spark plugs.
  • Insert the new or cleaned spark plugs into the cylinder head and hand-tighten them.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the spark plugs to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 12-15 lb-ft for many Ford engines).
5. Reinstall Ignition Coils
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil boots.
  • Reinstall the ignition coils in the reverse order of removal and secure them with bolts.
  • Reconnect the electrical connectors to each ignition coil.
6. Reconnect Battery
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable securely.
