Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools: socket set, torque wrench, C-clamp, brake cleaner, and safety goggles.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels before lifting the vehicle.
2. Lift Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front or rear of the vehicle, as necessary.
  • Secure the vehicle with jack stands.
3. Remove Wheel
  • Remove the loosened lug nuts completely and take off the wheel.
4. Inspect and Replace Brake Pads
  • Inspect Brake Pads:
    • Check for thickness; pads should be at least 1/4 inch thick.
    • Look for uneven wear or damage.
  • Replace Brake Pads:
    • Remove caliper bolts using a socket wrench.
    • Slide the caliper off the rotor and support it with a bungee cord or wire.
    • Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
    • Install new brake pads, ensuring they are correctly seated.
    • Compress the caliper piston using a C-clamp to allow room for the new pads.
5. Inspect and Replace Brake Rotors (if necessary)
  • Inspect Rotors:
    • Check for warping or scoring; replace if necessary.
  • Replace Rotors:
    • Remove caliper bracket bolts and take the bracket off.
    • Slide the rotor off the hub.
    • Clean the hub surface and install the new rotor.
    • Reinstall the caliper bracket and torque to manufacturer specifications.
6. Reassemble
  • Reinstall the caliper over the new pads and rotor.
  • Tighten caliper bolts to specification.
  • Place the wheel back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
7. Lower Vehicle
  • Remove jack stands and lower the vehicle.
  • Torque the lug nuts to manufacturer specifications in a crisscross pattern.
