Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, C-clamp, brake cleaner, anti-seize lubricant.
  • Safety Warnings: Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the wheels are chocked. Wear safety glasses and gloves.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels slightly while the vehicle is on the ground.
  • Use the jack to lift the front of the vehicle and securely place jack stands under the frame.
  • Remove the front wheels completely.
3. Remove the Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper mounting bolts (usually two bolts on the back of the caliper).
  • Use the socket set to remove the caliper bolts and carefully slide the caliper off the rotor.
  • Suspend the caliper using a bungee cord or similar, ensuring the brake line is not strained.
4. Remove the Old Brake Pads
  • Slide the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Inspect the caliper bracket for any debris and clean if necessary.
5. Compress the Brake Caliper Piston
  • Place the C-clamp over the caliper and against the back of the caliper housing, with the pad facing the piston.
  • Slowly tighten the C-clamp to compress the piston back into the caliper. Ensure the brake fluid reservoir cap is removed to allow fluid to return.
6. Install New Brake Pads
  • Apply anti-seize lubricant to the backing of the new brake pads (avoid the friction surface).
  • Slide the new brake pads into the caliper bracket in the same position as the old pads.
7. Reinstall the Brake Caliper
  • Position the caliper over the new pads and rotor.
  • Reinstall and tighten the caliper mounting bolts to the manufacturer’s torque specifications (typically around 20-25 ft-lbs).
8. Reassemble and Lower the Vehicle
  • Reinstall the front wheels and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands using the jack.
  • Once on the ground, fully tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s torque specifications (typically around 150 ft-lbs).
