Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Jack and jack stands
    • Lug wrench
    • Ratchet and socket set
    • C-clamp or brake caliper tool
    • Brake cleaner
    • Brake grease
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
    • Wear safety glasses and gloves.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front or rear of the vehicle, depending on which brake pads are being replaced.
  • Secure the vehicle with jack stands.
3. Remove the Wheel
  • Use a lug wrench to loosen and remove the lug nuts from the wheel.
  • Take off the wheel to access the brake assembly.
4. Remove the Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper mounting bolts and remove them using the appropriate socket.
  • Carefully slide the caliper off the brake pads and suspend it using a bungee cord or rope to avoid stress on the brake line.
5. Replace the Brake Pads
  • Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  • Compare the old pads with the new ones for proper fit.
  • Apply brake grease to the back of the new brake pads to prevent noise.
  • Install the new brake pads into the caliper bracket.
6. Compress the Caliper Piston
  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to gently compress the caliper piston back into the caliper housing.
  • Ensure the piston is fully retracted to accommodate the new, thicker brake pads.
7. Reinstall the Brake Caliper
  • Slide the caliper back over the new brake pads.
  • Reinstall and torque the caliper mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.
8. Reinstall the Wheel
  • Place the wheel back onto the hub.
  • Hand-tighten the lug nuts and then lower the vehicle back onto the ground.
  • Torque the lug nuts to the specified torque value.
9. Test the Brakes
  • Pump the brake pedal several times to ensure the pads seat properly against the rotors.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off if necessary.
