Solution
1. Preparation
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the parking brake is engaged.
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Ensure the vehicle is stable before working underneath.
3. Inspect the U-Joints
  • Visually inspect the U-joints for any signs of rust, cracks, or excessive grease leakage.
  • Rotate the driveshaft by hand to see if the U-joints rotate smoothly without binding or resistance.
4. Check for Play
  • Use your hands to try and move the driveshaft at the U-joint connection.
    • If there is excessive play, the U-joint may need to be replaced.
  • Insert a pry bar under the driveshaft to observe any movement in the U-joint.
5. Removal of U-Joint (if necessary)
  • Remove the driveshaft by loosening the bolts at both ends using a socket set.
  • Mark the driveshaft and differential for reinstallation alignment.
  • Use a U-joint removal tool or socket to press out the U-joint from the yoke.
6. Install New U-Joint (if necessary)
  • Apply grease to the new U-joint and position it in the yoke.
  • Use the U-joint tool to press the new U-joint into place.
  • Reinstall the driveshaft and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications (usually around 15-20 ft-lbs).
