Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set, power steering fluid, drain pan, belt tensioner tool, pulley puller.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Remove the Serpentine Belt
  • Locate the belt tensioner and use a belt tensioner tool to relieve tension on the belt.
  • Carefully slide the belt off the power steering pump pulley.
  • Note the routing of the belt for reinstallation.
3. Drain Power Steering Fluid
  • Place a drain pan under the power steering pump.
  • Remove the return line from the pump and allow the fluid to drain completely into the pan.
  • Cap or cover the return line to prevent contaminants from entering.
4. Remove the Power Steering Pump
  • Unbolt the power steering pump from its mounting bracket (typically 2-3 bolts).
  • Disconnect the high-pressure hose by loosening its fitting with a wrench.
  • Carefully pull the pump away from the mounting bracket and remove it from the vehicle.
5. Install the New Power Steering Pump
  • Position the new power steering pump in the mounting bracket.
  • Reconnect the high-pressure hose and tighten the fitting to the manufacturer’s specified torque (usually around 15-20 ft-lbs).
  • Bolt the pump securely to the bracket.
6. Reconnect the Return Line and Refill Fluid
  • Reattach the return line to the pump.
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with new power steering fluid per manufacturer specifications.
7. Reinstall the Serpentine Belt
  • Route the serpentine belt back onto the pulleys according to the noted routing.
  • Use the belt tensioner tool to apply tension and secure the belt.
8. Final Checks
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Start the engine and allow it to idle. Check for leaks around the pump and hoses.
  • Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to help bleed air from the system and check for any unusual noises.
