my Ford Explorer makes a whining noise when turning what's causing it

Solution

1. Preparation

• Gather necessary tools and parts.
• Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake.
• Disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on electrical components.

2. Check and Refill Power Steering Fluid

• Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
• Remove the cap and check the fluid level; it should be between the "Min" and "Max" marks.
• If low, add the appropriate power steering fluid as specified in the owner’s manual.
• Replace the cap securely.

3. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Pump (if needed)

• Drain the power steering fluid by removing the return line from the pump.
• Disconnect the pump from the mounting bracket using a socket set.
• Remove the pump from the vehicle and replace it with a new one.
• Reconnect the return line and refill the power steering fluid.

4. Inspect Steering Rack (if needed)

• Remove the plastic cover under the steering column to access the steering rack.
• Check for any visible leaks or damage to the steering rack.
• If damage is found, remove the steering rack by disconnecting the tie rod ends and mounting bolts.
• Install the new steering rack and reconnect all components.
