Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather required tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Allow the engine to cool if it has been running.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Drain Power Steering Fluid
  • Place a drain pan under the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Remove the reservoir cap and drain the fluid completely.
  • Dispose of the old fluid according to local regulations.
3. Remove the Steering Rack
  • Disconnect the steering linkage from the steering rack using a socket set.
  • Remove the bolts securing the steering rack to the vehicle's subframe.
  • Disconnect the hydraulic lines from the steering rack, using a line wrench to avoid damage.
  • Carefully slide the steering rack out from the vehicle.
4. Inspect and Replace Seals
  • Examine the seals on the steering rack for wear or damage.
  • If necessary, replace the worn seals with new ones.
  • Lubricate the new seals with power steering fluid before installation.
5. Reinstall the Steering Rack
  • Position the steering rack back into its mounting location.
  • Reconnect the hydraulic lines and tighten them to the manufacturer's specified torque (typically around 20-25 Nm).
  • Reinstall the steering linkage and secure it with bolts, torqued to specifications (usually around 30 Nm).
6. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Refill the power steering fluid reservoir with the recommended type (usually Dexron III or compatible).
  • Start the engine and allow it to run for a few minutes while turning the steering wheel from lock to lock to purge air from the system.
7. Check for Leaks
  • Inspect all connections and the steering rack for any signs of leakage.
  • Top off the fluid level if necessary.
