Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: OBD-II scanner, socket set, torque wrench, multimeter, fluid catch pan.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical shorts.
2. Check and Replace Transmission Fluid
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Remove the transmission fluid drain plug using the socket set and allow fluid to drain into the catch pan.
    2. Replace the drain plug and torque it to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 25 Nm).
    3. Remove the transmission fluid dipstick and add new transmission fluid as per the manufacturer's specifications (usually BMW ATF fluid).
    4. Start the engine and let it idle while cycling through the gears (P, R, N, D) to ensure the new fluid circulates.
    5. Check the fluid level again and top off if necessary.
3. Replace Transmission Filter
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Drain the transmission fluid again (as in the previous step).
    2. Remove the transmission pan by unscrewing the bolts with the socket set.
    3. Carefully detach the old filter and replace it with a new one, ensuring it is seated correctly.
    4. Clean the transmission pan and replace the gasket before reattaching the pan, torquing bolts to the specified values.
    5. Refill the transmission with new fluid as described in Step 2.
4. Inspect and Replace Transmission Solenoids (if necessary)
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Remove the transmission pan again if solenoids are located underneath.
    2. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the solenoids.
    3. Remove the solenoids using the appropriate socket size.
    4. Install the new solenoids and reconnect the wiring harness.
    5. Reattach the transmission pan and refill with fluid as previously described.
