Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface with the engine off.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Check Coolant Level
  • Tools Required: None
  • Remove the coolant reservoir cap and check the fluid level.
  • If low, top up with appropriate coolant mixture (50% water, 50% BMW coolant).
3. Inspect and Replace Thermostat (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench
  • Drain the coolant from the radiator.
  • Locate the thermostat housing, usually near the engine block.
  • Remove the housing bolts and carefully lift the housing.
  • Take out the old thermostat and replace it with a new one, ensuring the orientation is correct.
  • Reinstall the housing and torque to manufacturer specifications.
4. Bleed the Cooling System
  • Tools Required: Coolant funnel
  • Fill the cooling system with the appropriate coolant mixture.
  • Use a funnel to fill the system and run the engine with the heater set to maximum on high until the thermostat opens (watch for temperature gauge).
  • Keep topping off the coolant to ensure no air bubbles remain.
5. Inspect Heater Core
  • Tools Required: Screwdriver set, hoses
  • Locate the heater core hoses under the dashboard.
  • Check for blockages by feeling for hot and cold spots on the hoses.
  • If blocked, disconnect the hoses and flush the heater core with a garden hose.
6. Reconnect Battery and Test
  • Tools Required: None
  • Reconnect the vehicle battery.
  • Start the engine and set the heater to maximum heat.
  • Monitor for warm air from the vents.
