Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all tools and parts required for the repair.
  • Park the vehicle on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the battery to avoid electrical shorts during the repair.
2. Drain Power Steering Fluid
  • Place a drain pan under the power steering system.
  • Remove the power steering reservoir cap and drain the fluid into the pan.
  • Dispose of the old fluid according to local regulations.
3. Remove Steering Rack
  • Lift the front of the vehicle using a hydraulic jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels for better access.
  • Disconnect the steering linkage from the steering rack.
  • Unbolt the steering rack from its mounting points using a socket set.
  • Carefully slide the rack out of its housing.
4. Replace Seals or Steering Rack
  • If applicable, replace worn seals on the steering rack using a seal kit.
    • Remove old seals with a pick tool.
    • Install new seals, ensuring a proper fit.
  • If the rack is severely damaged, replace it with a new or remanufactured steering rack.
5. Reinstall Steering Rack
  • Slide the steering rack back into place and secure it with bolts.
  • Reattach the steering linkage and tighten to factory specifications (check service manual for torque values).
  • Reinstall the front wheels.
6. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Refill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid type (check owner's manual).
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to purge air from the system.
7. Final Checks
  • Inspect for leaks around the steering rack and connections.
  • Ensure the fluid level is correct after purging air.
