Solution
1. Preparation
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
2. Check and Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering reservoir.
  • If the fluid level is low, add the manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid until it reaches the "full" mark.
  • Inspect the fluid's condition; if it appears dark or contaminated, proceed to flush the system.
3. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Pump (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, fluid catch pan
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Remove any components obstructing access to the power steering pump.
  • Disconnect the power steering pump's inlet and outlet hoses, allowing fluid to drain into the catch pan.
  • Unbolt the power steering pump from its mounting bracket.
  • Install the new power steering pump by reversing the removal steps. Ensure all bolts are torqued to the manufacturer's specifications.
4. Inspect and Replace Steering Rack (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, socket set, alignment tools
  • Raise the vehicle securely on jack stands.
  • Disconnect the steering column from the steering rack.
  • Remove the tie rod ends from the steering rack.
  • Unbolt the steering rack from its mounting points.
  • Install the new steering rack and reassemble by reversing the removal steps. Ensure proper alignment and torque specifications.
5. Flush Power Steering System
  • Connect a hose to the power steering pump outlet.
  • Using a funnel, fill the reservoir with fresh power steering fluid.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to purge air from the system.
  • Check fluid levels and top off as needed.
