Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Allow the engine to cool before starting work.
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, spark plug socket, extension bar, and dielectric grease.
2. Remove Engine Cover
  • Using a socket set, remove the bolts securing the engine cover.
  • Gently lift off the engine cover and set it aside.
3. Access Spark Plugs
  • Locate the ignition coils on top of the spark plugs.
  • Disconnect the electrical connectors from each ignition coil.
  • Remove the bolts securing the ignition coils using the socket set.
  • Carefully pull out each ignition coil to expose the spark plugs.
4. Remove Old Spark Plugs
  • Use a spark plug socket to carefully unscrew and remove each spark plug from the cylinder head.
  • Inspect the old spark plugs for wear or damage.
5. Install New Spark Plugs
  • Check the gap of the new spark plugs using a gap gauge and adjust if necessary to meet specifications (usually around 0.028-0.032 inches for BMW).
  • Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound on the threads of each new spark plug (if recommended).
  • Carefully thread each new spark plug into the cylinder head by hand to avoid cross-threading, then torque to the manufacturer's specifications (typically around 15-20 Nm).
6. Reinstall Ignition Coils
  • Apply dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil boots to ensure proper fit and prevent moisture ingress.
  • Reinstall each ignition coil, securing them with their bolts.
  • Reconnect the electrical connectors to each ignition coil.
7. Reinstall Engine Cover
  • Position the engine cover back in place and secure it with the previously removed bolts.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
