Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
  • Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent electrical issues.
2. Check and Replace Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering reservoir.
  • Remove the cap and check the fluid level; top off with the recommended fluid if low.
  • If fluid is dark or contaminated, drain the old fluid using a siphon pump.
  • Refill with fresh power steering fluid according to BMW specifications.
3. Replace Power Steering Pump (if defective)
  • Locate the power steering pump; remove any covers obstructing access.
  • Disconnect the power steering lines using a wrench; have a drain pan ready to catch fluid.
  • Remove the mounting bolts of the pump using a socket set.
  • Install the new pump, tightening bolts to the manufacturer's torque specifications (usually around 25-30 Nm).
  • Reconnect the power steering lines securely.
4. Inspect and Replace Steering Rack (if necessary)
  • Lift the front of the vehicle using jack stands for safety.
  • Remove the front wheels for access.
  • Disconnect the steering shaft from the steering rack.
  • Unbolt and remove the steering rack from its mounts.
  • Install the new steering rack, ensuring all bolts are torqued to specifications.
  • Reconnect the steering shaft securely.
5. Final Assembly
  • Reinstall the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  • Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock to lock to purge air from the system.
