Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and safety equipment.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
  • Wear gloves and safety goggles.
2. Coolant Replacement
  1. Drain Old Coolant

    • Place a drain pan underneath the radiator.
    • Open the radiator drain valve and allow coolant to drain completely.
  2. Flush the Cooling System

    • Fill the system with a coolant flush solution and water.
    • Run the engine for about 10-15 minutes with the heater on max.
    • Drain the system again to remove contaminants.
  3. Refill with New Coolant

    • Mix the appropriate BMW-approved coolant with distilled water (typically a 50/50 mix).
    • Fill the radiator and reservoir to the specified levels.
3. Thermostat Replacement (if faulty)
  1. Remove Thermostat Housing

    • Locate the thermostat housing and remove any hoses connected to it.
    • Unbolt the housing using a socket set and remove it from the engine.
  2. Replace Thermostat

    • Remove the old thermostat and clean the mating surfaces.
    • Install the new thermostat in the correct orientation and reattach the housing.
4. Water Pump Inspection and Replacement (if necessary)
  1. Access Water Pump

    • Remove components obstructing access to the water pump (e.g., belts, pulleys).
  2. Remove Old Water Pump

    • Unbolt the water pump from the engine block.
    • Remove any old gasket material and clean the surface.
  3. Install New Water Pump

    • Position the new water pump and bolt it in place.
    • Reinstall the serpentine belt and other components removed.
