Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
  • Disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on electrical components.
2. Coolant Check and Refill
  • Open the coolant reservoir cap slowly to release any pressure.
  • If the coolant is low, top it up with a 50/50 mixture of BMW-approved coolant and distilled water.
  • Replace the cap securely.
3. Inspect and Replace the Thermostat
  • Locate the thermostat housing (usually near the engine block).
  • Remove the bolts securing the thermostat housing using a socket set.
  • Take out the old thermostat and replace it with a new one, ensuring the correct orientation.
  • Reinstall the thermostat housing, torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications (generally around 10-12 Nm), and check for leaks.
4. Heater Control Valve Inspection
  • Locate the heater control valve (usually near the firewall).
  • Disconnect the electrical connector and hoses attached to the valve.
  • Test the valve operation by applying voltage to the actuator; it should open and close smoothly.
  • If malfunctioning, replace the heater control valve with a new part.
5. Flush the Heater Core
  • Connect a garden hose to the inlet and outlet of the heater core.
  • Flush with water until the water runs clear to remove any blockages.
  • Reconnect the hoses securely.
6. Reconnect Battery and Test
  • Reconnect the battery terminals.
  • Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature.
  • Set the HVAC system to the maximum heat and check if warm air is blown from the vents.
