Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, steering wheel puller, lubricant.
  • Safety Warnings: Disconnect the battery to prevent accidental airbag deployment. Allow the vehicle to cool if it has been running.
2. Remove Steering Wheel
  1. Disconnect the battery and wait 10 minutes to ensure airbag safety.
  2. Remove the airbag module by unscrewing the retaining screws from the back of the steering wheel.
  3. Disconnect the airbag connectors and set the airbag aside.
  4. Remove the steering wheel nut using a socket wrench.
  5. Use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel from the column.
3. Inspect Steering Column Components
  1. Visually inspect the steering column for cracks or signs of damage.
  2. Check the U-joint for wear or play; replace if necessary.
  3. Tighten any loose bolts or fasteners associated with the steering column.
4. Lubricate Moving Parts
  1. Apply a suitable lubricant to the U-joint and any pivot points within the steering column.
  2. Ensure that the lubricant penetrates well and that excess is wiped away.
5. Reassemble Steering Wheel
  1. Reinstall the steering wheel onto the column, aligning it correctly.
  2. Torque the steering wheel nut to manufacturer specifications (typically around 35 Nm).
  3. Reconnect the airbag module and ensure all connectors are secure.
  4. Reconnect the battery.
