Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
  • Disconnect the battery to avoid electrical issues.
2. Inspect and Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Remove the power steering fluid reservoir cap.
  • Check fluid level against the markings on the reservoir.
  • If low, use the recommended power steering fluid (check owner's manual for specifications).
  • Reinstall the cap securely.
3. Replace Power Steering Pump (if faulty)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, fluid catch pan.
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Drain the power steering fluid using a fluid catch pan.
    2. Disconnect the power steering pump from the reservoir and hoses.
    3. Unbolt the power steering pump from its mounting bracket.
    4. Install the new power steering pump and secure it with bolts to the bracket (torque to manufacturer specifications).
    5. Reconnect the hoses and the reservoir.
4. Inspect and Replace Steering Rack (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, alignment tools, torque wrench.
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Lift the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
    2. Disconnect the steering shaft from the steering rack.
    3. Remove the tie rod ends from the steering rack.
    4. Unbolt the steering rack from the chassis and remove it.
    5. Install the new steering rack and secure it with bolts (torque to manufacturer specifications).
    6. Reconnect the tie rod ends and steering shaft.
5. Bleed the Power Steering System
  • Tools Required: Power steering fluid, funnel.
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid.
    2. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to purge air from the system.
    3. Check fluid level and top off as needed.
