Solution

💡 Expert Tip

For complex repairs like this, consider taking photos at each step. This helps if you need to reverse a step or consult with a mechanic. Also, keep all removed parts organized - you may need to reference them during reassembly.

Verification

After completing the repair, verify that the issue has been resolved:

  • ✓Test the affected component to ensure it functions correctly
  • ✓Check for any error codes or warning lights
  • ✓Monitor the vehicle for a few days to ensure the issue does not recur

Prevention Tips

To prevent this issue from occurring again:

  • •Follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule
  • •Address warning signs early before they develop into major issues
  • •Use quality parts and fluids recommended for your vehicle
  • •Keep detailed records of all repairs and maintenance

Tools & Equipment Required

  • •Inspect brake lines for any signs of leakage. If leaks are found:
  • •Clean the area around the leak with brake cleaner.
  • •Replace damaged brake lines or fittings, ensuring to flare the ends correctly.
  • •Tighten any loose connections to prevent further leaks.

Parts Required

  • •Brake fluid (DOT 4)
  • •Brake lines (if leaks are found)
  • •Master cylinder (if defective)

Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and secured with wheel chocks.
  • Wear safety goggles and gloves.
2. Inspect and Repair Leaks
  • Tools Required: Brake line wrench, brake cleaner, rags
  • Inspect brake lines for any signs of leakage. If leaks are found:
    • Clean the area around the leak with brake cleaner.
    • Replace damaged brake lines or fittings, ensuring to flare the ends correctly.
    • Tighten any loose connections to prevent further leaks.
3. Replace Brake Fluid
  • Tools Required: Brake fluid, turkey baster, funnel
  • Remove the old brake fluid from the reservoir using a turkey baster.
  • Refill the reservoir with the manufacturer's recommended brake fluid type (DOT 4 is common for BMW).
  • Bleed the brake lines to remove air:
    1. Attach a clear tube to the bleeder valve on the farthest brake caliper.
    2. Have an assistant pump the brake pedal several times and hold it down.
    3. Open the bleeder valve and allow fluid to escape until no air bubbles are visible.
    4. Close the valve, and repeat for each wheel in order (farthest to nearest from master cylinder).
4. Inspect and Replace Master Cylinder (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, brake line wrench
  • If the brake pedal still sinks after bleeding:
    • Disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder.
    • Unbolt the master cylinder from the brake booster.
    • Install the new master cylinder and torque bolts to manufacturer specifications.
    • Reconnect brake lines, ensuring they are tight and leak-free.
