Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts required.
  • Ensure the engine is cool before starting work.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal for safety.
2. Replace Temperature Sensor
  1. Locate the temperature sensor, usually found near the thermostat housing or in the engine block.
  2. Disconnect the wiring harness from the sensor.
  3. Use a socket wrench to carefully unscrew the old temperature sensor.
  4. Apply thread sealant to the new sensor and install it in the same position.
  5. Reconnect the wiring harness securely.
3. Inspect and Replace Thermostat (if needed)
  1. Drain the engine coolant into a clean container.
  2. Remove the hoses connected to the thermostat housing.
  3. Unscrew the thermostat housing bolts and remove the housing.
  4. Take out the old thermostat and check for proper operation (it should open in hot water).
  5. Install the new thermostat and gasket into the housing.
  6. Reassemble the housing and reconnect the hoses.
4. Refill Coolant
  1. Using a funnel, refill the cooling system with the appropriate coolant mixture specified by BMW.
  2. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature while monitoring the gauge.
  3. Check for any leaks around the sensor and thermostat areas.
5. Test Drive
  1. After repairs, take the vehicle for a test drive to monitor the temperature gauge during various driving conditions.
  2. Observe for any fluctuations or warning lights.
