Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, torque wrench, C-clamp or brake caliper tool, brake cleaner, and a soft cloth.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is turned off.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical issues.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front or rear of the BMW X3, depending on which axle you are servicing.
  • Secure the vehicle with jack stands to ensure stability.
3. Remove the Wheel
  • Use a lug wrench to loosen and remove the lug nuts.
  • Carefully remove the wheel and set it aside.
4. Remove the Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper mounting bolts and use the socket set to remove them.
  • Gently slide the caliper off the rotor. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake line; use a bungee cord or rope to secure it.
5. Replace Brake Pads
  • Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  • If the pads are equipped with anti-squeal shims, ensure they are replaced or reused if they are in good condition.
  • Insert the new brake pads into the caliper bracket, ensuring they are positioned correctly.
6. Compress the Caliper Piston
  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to compress the caliper piston back into the caliper housing. This will create space for the new, thicker brake pads.
  • Ensure the piston is fully retracted before proceeding.
7. Reinstall the Brake Caliper
  • Carefully position the caliper over the new brake pads.
  • Reinstall and tighten the caliper mounting bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically between 25-30 ft-lbs; confirm with a service manual).
8. Reinstall the Wheel
  • Place the wheel back onto the hub, aligning it with the wheel studs.
  • Hand-tighten the lug nuts and then use the lug wrench to secure them in a star pattern.
9. Lower the Vehicle
  • Carefully remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle back to the ground.
10. Final Checks
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Pump the brake pedal several times to ensure proper brake pad seating.
  • Check brake fluid level and top off if necessary.
