Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and securely lifted with jack stands.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical issues during repair.
2. Remove the Old Power Steering Fluid
  • Tools Required: Fluid siphon or turkey baster.
  • Use a siphon to extract old power steering fluid from the reservoir.
  • Dispose of the fluid according to local regulations.
3. Locate and Repair the Leak
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrenches, torque wrench.

  • If the leak is from the power steering pump:

    • Remove the drive belt by loosening the tensioner pulley.
    • Disconnect the power steering pump from its mounting bracket.
    • Remove the high-pressure and low-pressure hoses from the pump.
    • Replace any damaged o-rings or seals.
    • Reinstall the pump and hoses, and torque to manufacturer's specifications.
  • If the leak is from the hoses:

    • Disconnect the leaking hose(s) from their respective connections.
    • Replace with new hoses ensuring they are rated for power steering fluid.
    • Reconnect and tighten securely.
  • If the leak is from the steering rack:

    • Detach the tie rod ends and any necessary suspension components for access.
    • Replace the steering rack if leaks are present that cannot be sealed.
    • Reinstall components and torque to specifications.
4. Refill the Power Steering System
  • Tools Required: Funnel.
  • Refill the reservoir with the manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid.
  • Allow the fluid to settle and check the level, adding more as needed.
5. Bleed the Power Steering System
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to expel air.
  • Check the fluid level again and top off as necessary.
