Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and safety equipment.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the engine is off.
2. Inspect Power Steering Fluid
  • Remove the power steering fluid reservoir cap.
  • Check the fluid level; if low, top off with the manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid.
  • Inspect the fluid for contamination (dark or gritty appearance) and replace if necessary.
3. Check for Leaks
  • Visually inspect the power steering pump, hoses, and steering rack for any signs of fluid leaks.
  • If leaks are found, replace faulty hoses or seals as needed.
  • Use a clean cloth to wipe areas that are wet with fluid for easier future inspections.
4. Replace Power Steering Pump (if necessary)
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Remove the serpentine belt by loosening the tensioner bolt.
  • Unbolt the power steering pump from its mounting bracket.
  • Disconnect the fluid lines carefully (have a drain pan underneath).
  • Install the new power steering pump and reconnect the fluid lines.
  • Reinstall the serpentine belt and reconnect the battery terminal.
5. Bleed the Power Steering System
  • With the engine running, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to push air out of the system.
  • Check the fluid level again and top off as needed.
