Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

Tools Required:

  • OBD-II scanner
  • Multimeter
  • Socket set
  • Torque wrench
  • Ratchet and extensions
2. Remove Ignition Coil
  • Locate the ignition coils on the engine (usually on top of the engine under the engine cover).
  • Remove the engine cover if necessary by unscrewing any retaining bolts.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil by pressing the tab and pulling it off.
  • Remove the bolt(s) securing the ignition coil using the socket set.
  • Gently pull the ignition coil out of the cylinder head.
3. Inspect and Replace Ignition Coil
  • Check the removed ignition coil for cracks or other damage.
  • If faulty, install the new ignition coil by aligning it with the cylinder head and pressing it down firmly.
  • Secure the ignition coil with the bolt(s) and tighten to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically around 8 Nm).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks into place.
4. Replace Spark Plugs (if necessary)
  • If spark plugs are worn or fouled, remove them using a spark plug socket.
  • Inspect the gap on the new spark plugs and adjust if necessary to meet specifications (usually around 0.028-0.032 inches for BMW).
  • Install the new spark plugs, hand-tighten, then tighten to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically 23 Nm).
5. Reassemble and Test
  • Reinstall the engine cover if removed.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Start the engine and monitor for any misfires or check engine light.
