💡 Expert Tip

For complex repairs like this, consider taking photos at each step. This helps if you need to reverse a step or consult with a mechanic. Also, keep all removed parts organized - you may need to reference them during reassembly.

Verification

After completing the repair, verify that the issue has been resolved:

  • ✓Test the affected component to ensure it functions correctly
  • ✓Check for any error codes or warning lights
  • ✓Monitor the vehicle for a few days to ensure the issue does not recur

Prevention Tips

To prevent this issue from occurring again:

  • •Follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule
  • •Address warning signs early before they develop into major issues
  • •Use quality parts and fluids recommended for your vehicle
  • •Keep detailed records of all repairs and maintenance

Tools & Equipment Required

  • •OBD-II scanner
  • •Brake bleeder kit (vacuum or pressure)
  • •Socket set
  • •Wrenches (line and socket)
  • •Torque wrench

Parts Required

Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface with the engine off and the parking brake engaged.
  • Wear safety goggles and gloves.
2. Check and Refill Brake Fluid
  • Locate the brake fluid reservoir and remove the cap.
  • If fluid is low, refill with the recommended brake fluid (DOT 4 for BMW).
  • Inspect for visible leaks around the reservoir and cap.
3. Inspect and Replace Damaged Components
  • Brake Lines and Hoses:
    • Inspect all brake lines for cracks or corrosion.
    • If damaged, use a line wrench to disconnect the damaged section and replace it with new brake line or hose.
  • Brake Calipers:
    • Remove the wheel and inspect the caliper for leaks.
    • If leaking, replace the caliper by removing the bolts securing it to the bracket.
    • Install the new caliper and torque bolts to manufacturer specifications (usually around 25 Nm).
4. Bleed the Brake System
  • Using a brake bleeder kit, attach it to the brake bleeder screw on the furthest caliper from the master cylinder (usually rear passenger side).
  • Open the bleeder screw and have an assistant depress the brake pedal.
  • Close the bleeder screw before releasing the brake pedal.
  • Repeat the process until no air bubbles are visible in the fluid.
  • Move to the next caliper in the order: rear driver side, front passenger side, and finally front driver side.
5. Inspect and Replace the Master Cylinder (if necessary)
  • If the pedal still feels soft after bleeding, the master cylinder may be faulty.
  • Disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder and remove the mounting bolts.
  • Replace with a new master cylinder, ensuring all connections are secure.
  • Refill brake fluid and bleed the system again.
