💡 Expert Tip

For complex repairs like this, consider taking photos at each step. This helps if you need to reverse a step or consult with a mechanic. Also, keep all removed parts organized - you may need to reference them during reassembly.

Verification

After completing the repair, verify that the issue has been resolved:

  • ✓Test the affected component to ensure it functions correctly
  • ✓Check for any error codes or warning lights
  • ✓Monitor the vehicle for a few days to ensure the issue does not recur

Prevention Tips

To prevent this issue from occurring again:

  • •Follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule
  • •Address warning signs early before they develop into major issues

Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and secure it with wheel chocks.
  • Wear safety gloves and goggles.
2. Inspect and Top Off Brake Fluid
  • Locate the brake fluid reservoir under the hood.
  • Check the fluid level; if low, add the appropriate type of brake fluid (usually DOT 4 for BMW).
  • If the fluid is contaminated (dark or cloudy), it should be replaced.
3. Bleeding the Brake System
  • Tools Required: Brake bleeder kit, wrench for bleeder screws, clear tubing.
  • Start with the wheel farthest from the master cylinder (right rear).
    1. Attach the clear tubing to the bleeder screw and place the other end in a container.
    2. Have an assistant pump the brake pedal several times and hold it down.
    3. Open the bleeder screw to release fluid and air, then close it before your assistant releases the pedal.
    4. Repeat this process until no air bubbles are visible in the fluid.
    5. Proceed to the left rear, then right front, and finally left front in the same manner.
4. Inspect Brake Components
  • If the pedal remains spongy after bleeding, inspect the brake pads and rotors for wear.
  • Replace any worn pads or damaged rotors as necessary.
5. Check and Replace the Master Cylinder (if necessary)
  • If the issue persists, the master cylinder may need replacing.
  • Tools Required: Wrench set, brake line wrenches.
  • Disconnect brake lines from the master cylinder, remove mounting bolts, and replace with a new master cylinder.
  • Bleed the system again after replacement.
