Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, fluid catch pan, OBD-II scanner, power steering pressure gauge.
  • Safety Warnings: Disconnect the battery before working on electrical systems. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface.
2. Check and Top Off Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Remove the cap and check the fluid level against the markings on the reservoir.
  • If low, add manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid until it reaches the proper level.
  • Reinstall the cap securely.
3. Replace Power Steering Fluid
  • Tools Required: Fluid catch pan, siphon pump, new power steering fluid.
  • Place a fluid catch pan under the power steering pump.
  • Use a siphon pump to remove old fluid from the reservoir.
  • Refill with new power steering fluid as per manufacturer specifications.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel left and right to circulate the new fluid. Recheck fluid level and top off if necessary.
4. Replace Power Steering Pump (if faulty)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, new power steering pump, new seals.
  • Disconnect the battery.
  • Drain the power steering fluid from the system.
  • Remove the serpentine belt from the power steering pump.
  • Unbolt the pump from its bracket and disconnect the hoses.
  • Install the new pump, ensuring all connections are tight.
  • Refill with power steering fluid and check for leaks.
5. Inspect and Replace Steering Rack (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, new steering rack.
  • Lift the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Disconnect the steering column from the steering rack.
  • Remove the tie rod ends from the steering rack.
  • Unbolt the steering rack from its mount and carefully remove it.
  • Install the new steering rack and reattach all components in reverse order.
  • Torque all bolts to manufacturer specifications.
