Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts needed for the repair.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is turned off.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repairs.
2. Inspect Transmission Fluid
  • Remove the transmission dipstick and wipe it clean.
  • Insert the dipstick back into the tube and remove it again to check the fluid level.
    • If low, add the appropriate BMW transmission fluid (usually ZF Lifeguard 8 or equivalent).
    • If the fluid is burnt or contaminated, proceed to the fluid change.
3. Change Transmission Fluid (if needed)
  • Place a drain pan under the transmission pan.
  • Remove the transmission pan bolts and gently pry the pan off.
  • Drain the old fluid completely and replace the filter if applicable.
  • Reinstall the pan with new gasket and torque bolts to the manufacturer's specifications (typically around 10 Nm).
  • Refill the transmission with new fluid through the dipstick tube.
4. Inspect Gear Shift Mechanism
  • Remove the trim around the gear selector.
  • Check for any obstructions or broken components within the gear shift assembly.
  • Ensure the cable/linkage connected to the transmission is secure and functioning properly.
5. Replace Transmission Range Sensor (if faulty)
  • Disconnect the battery and remove any components obstructing access to the range sensor.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector from the range sensor.
  • Remove the mounting bolts and carefully take out the old sensor.
  • Install the new sensor, ensuring it is aligned properly, and reconnect the electrical connector.
6. Reconnect Battery and Test
  • Reconnect the battery and start the vehicle.
  • Test the gear shifting operation through all ranges (Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive).
  • Ensure the transmission warning light is no longer illuminated.
