Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the engine is cool before starting work.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical issues.
2. Replace Coolant
  • Drain the Cooling System: Locate the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator and allow coolant to flow into a suitable container.
  • Flush the System (if necessary): Use a cooling system flush product and follow instructions for thorough cleaning.
  • Refill with New Coolant: Use a mix of BMW-approved coolant and distilled water (50/50 ratio) to refill the system.
  • Bleed Air from the System: Start the engine with the heater set to maximum and allow it to reach operating temperature. Open the bleed screw on top of the radiator until coolant flows without air bubbles.
3. Replace Thermostat
  • Remove the Thermostat Housing: Disconnect hoses and unbolt the thermostat housing to access the thermostat.
  • Remove and Replace: Remove the old thermostat and gasket. Install the new thermostat with a new gasket, ensuring it is oriented correctly.
  • Reassemble: Reattach the thermostat housing and hoses, tightening bolts to manufacturer specifications.
4. Inspect and Replace Water Pump (if faulty)
  • Remove Drive Belt: Use a socket set to loosen the tensioner and remove the serpentine belt.
  • Unbolt Water Pump: Disconnect hoses, unbolt the water pump from the engine block.
  • Install New Water Pump: Clean the mounting surface, install the new water pump, and reconnect hoses.
  • Reinstall Drive Belt: Place the serpentine belt back on the pulleys.
5. Inspect and Replace Radiator Fan (if necessary)
  • Remove Fan Shroud: Unclip or unbolt the fan shroud for access to the fan.
  • Disconnect Electrical Connector: Remove the connector from the fan motor.
  • Unbolt and Replace: Unscrew the fan from its mount and install the new fan.
  • Reassemble: Reattach the fan shroud and reconnect the electrical connector.
