Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface, and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the battery to avoid any electrical issues while working.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Ensure that the vehicle is stable before proceeding.
3. Remove Driveshaft
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench, torque wrench
  • Loosen and remove the bolts securing the driveshaft to the U-joint.
  • Carefully slide the driveshaft out of the U-joint, taking care not to damage any surrounding components.
4. Inspect and Replace U-joints
  • Check the U-joint for any signs of wear or damage.
  • If replacement is necessary:
    • Tools Required: U-joint puller, grease gun
    • Use the U-joint puller to remove the damaged U-joint from the driveshaft.
    • Clean the mating surfaces and install the new U-joint, ensuring it is properly aligned.
    • Grease the new U-joint with appropriate grease.
5. Reinstall Driveshaft
  • Slide the driveshaft back into place, ensuring it is securely fitted to the U-joint.
  • Torque the bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically between 30-50 Nm, check BMW specifications).
  • Reconnect any components that were removed or disconnected during the process.
6. Lower the Vehicle
  • Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle back to the ground.
  • Reconnect the battery.
