Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather Tools: OBD-II scanner, fluid catch pan, flashlight, and safety gloves.
  • Safety Precautions: Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and engine is off before starting.
2. Locate the Leak
  • Inspect Fluid Reservoir: Remove the cap and check for fluid condition. If it is low, fill it with the manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid.
  • Check for External Leaks: Use a flashlight to inspect the power steering pump, hoses, and steering rack for any visible leaks.
3. Repair or Replace Faulty Components
  • Hose Replacement:
    • If a hose is found to be damaged, use a socket set to remove the clamps and disconnect the old hose.
    • Install the new hose by connecting it securely and tightening the clamps to manufacturer specifications (typically 15-20 ft-lbs).
  • Pump Replacement:
    • Disconnect the battery before starting.
    • Remove the serpentine belt using a belt tensioner tool.
    • Disconnect the power steering pump hydraulic lines using a wrench.
    • Remove the pump bolts and take out the old pump.
    • Install the new pump and reattach the hydraulic lines and belt.
4. Refill and Bleed the System
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to bleed air from the system.
  • Check the fluid level again and top off as necessary.
