Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: OBD-II scanner, jack and jack stands, socket set, torque wrench, exhaust pipe cutter or saw, safety glasses, gloves.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool before beginning work.
2. Remove the Old Catalytic Converter
  1. Raise the Vehicle:
    • Use the jack to lift the vehicle and secure it on jack stands for safety.
  2. Disconnect Exhaust Components:
    • Remove any heat shields or brackets securing the catalytic converter.
    • Use the socket set to unbolt the flanges connecting the catalytic converter to the exhaust system.
  3. Cut the Exhaust Pipe (if necessary):
    • If the converter is welded in place, use an exhaust pipe cutter or saw to carefully cut the pipe on either side of the converter.
  4. Remove the Catalytic Converter:
    • Carefully take out the old catalytic converter from its position.
3. Install the New Catalytic Converter
  1. Position the New Converter:
    • Align the new catalytic converter in place, ensuring it matches the exhaust system configuration.
  2. Secure the Converter:
    • If applicable, weld or bolt the new catalytic converter to the exhaust system, ensuring all connections are tight.
    • Torque the bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications (usually around 30-35 ft-lbs for exhaust flanges).
  3. Reattach Heat Shields/Brackets:
    • Reinstall any heat shields or brackets removed during the disassembly.
4. Final Checks
  1. Lower the Vehicle:
    • Carefully remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle back to the ground.
  2. Reconnect the Battery:
    • If the battery was disconnected, reconnect it now.
  3. Clear Error Codes:
    • Use the OBD-II scanner to clear any diagnostic trouble codes related to the catalytic converter.
