Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the engine is cool.
  • Disconnect the battery negative terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Inspect and Replace Oxygen Sensors
  • Tools Required: O2 sensor socket, ratchet, torque wrench
  • Remove the connectors from the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors.
  • Using the O2 sensor socket, unscrew and remove the sensors from the exhaust system.
  • Install the new oxygen sensors by threading them into place and tightening to the manufacturer’s torque specifications (typically around 30 Nm).
  • Reconnect the sensors’ electrical connectors.
3. Check and Replace the Catalytic Converter
  • Tools Required: Socket set, jack stands, exhaust pipe cutter (if needed), gasket scraper
  • Raise the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.
  • Inspect the catalytic converter for damage. If it is blocked or damaged, it will need to be replaced.
  • Disconnect the exhaust pipes from the catalytic converter using the socket set.
  • Remove any heat shields or brackets that may be obstructing access.
  • Install the new catalytic converter, ensuring proper alignment with the exhaust system.
  • Reattach any brackets or heat shields and tighten all connections.
4. Clear Engine Codes
  • Tools Required: OBD-II scanner
  • Reconnect the battery terminal.
  • Use the OBD-II scanner to clear the P0420 code from the vehicle's computer.
  • Ensure all connections are secure and there are no exhaust leaks.
