Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, jack and jack stands, OBD-II scanner, fluid catch pan
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and securely elevated.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Fluid
  • Sub-steps:
    • Locate the power steering reservoir and check fluid level.
    • If fluid is low, top it off with the manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid.
    • If fluid is dirty or contaminated, drain the old fluid into a catch pan.
    • Refill with fresh power steering fluid.
3. Remove and Replace Steering Rack (if necessary)
  • Sub-steps:
    • Disconnect the battery and remove the front wheels for better access.
    • Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles using a ball joint separator.
    • Disconnect the steering column from the steering rack by removing the retaining bolts.
    • Detach the power steering hoses from the steering rack and plug them to prevent fluid leakage.
    • Unbolt the steering rack from the chassis and remove it from the vehicle.
    • Install the new steering rack by reversing the removal steps, ensuring all bolts are torqued to the manufacturer's specifications.
4. Reconnect and Test
  • Sub-steps:
    • Reconnect the power steering hoses securely.
    • Reconnect the battery and check for any leaks.
    • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to bleed any trapped air from the system.
5. Reinstall Front Wheels
  • Sub-steps:
    • Reinstall the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
    • Torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications.
