Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and securely raised using jack stands.
  • Disconnect the battery to avoid electrical issues during repairs.
2. Remove Steering Rack
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrenches, torque wrench, power steering line wrench.
  • Loosen and remove the bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe.
  • Disconnect the power steering lines from the rack using the power steering line wrench. Be prepared for fluid spillage; use a drain pan.
  • Remove the steering linkage from the rack by loosening the pinch bolt and separating it from the shaft.
  • Carefully remove the steering rack from the vehicle.
3. Inspect and Repair
  • Visually inspect the steering rack for damage or wear.
  • If the leak is from a seal, consider a seal replacement kit. If the rack is damaged, replace the entire steering rack.
  • Clean the steering rack and surrounding area to ensure no debris contaminates the new seals or rack.
4. Install New or Repaired Steering Rack
  • Position the new or rebuilt steering rack back into place.
  • Reattach the steering linkage, ensuring it is securely fastened with the pinch bolt.
  • Connect the power steering lines to the rack, ensuring they are tightened to specification.
  • Reinstall the bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe and torque them to the manufacturer’s specifications.
5. Refill and Bleed Steering System
  • Refill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid type.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to bleed air from the system.
  • Check for leaks around the new steering rack connections.
