Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts required for the repair.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
2. Elevate the Vehicle
  • Use a hydraulic jack to lift the front of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Ensure the vehicle is stable before proceeding.
3. Remove the Steering Rack
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Remove the wheel and tire on the side where the steering rack will be accessed.
  • Detach any components obstructing access to the steering rack, including the tie rod ends and any brackets.
  • Unbolt the steering rack from its mounting points and carefully remove it from the vehicle.
4. Inspect and Replace Seals
  • Inspect the seals on the steering rack for damage or wear.
  • If leaks are found, remove the old seals and clean the sealing surfaces.
  • Install new seals that are compatible with the BMW G20/G21 steering rack.
5. Reinstall the Steering Rack
  • Position the steering rack back into its mounting location.
  • Reattach the mounting bolts, ensuring they are torqued to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Reconnect the tie rod ends and any other components that were removed.
6. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Fill the power steering fluid reservoir with the appropriate fluid, following the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Bleed the power steering system by turning the steering wheel from lock to lock several times.
7. Final Checks
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and perform a test drive to ensure proper operation.
