Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Allow the engine to cool if recently driven.
2. Drain Old Transmission Fluid
  • Locate the transmission drain plug under the vehicle.
  • Place a drain pan under the transmission.
  • Remove the drain plug and allow the old fluid to completely drain out.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and torque it to manufacturer specifications (typically around 20 Nm).
3. Replace Transmission Filter
  • Remove the transmission pan using a socket set.
  • Carefully detach the old filter from the transmission.
  • Install the new filter, ensuring it is properly seated.
  • Clean the transmission pan and replace the gasket if needed.
4. Refill with New Transmission Fluid
  • Insert a funnel into the transmission dipstick tube or use the fill plug if applicable.
  • Pour in the new transmission fluid that meets BMW specifications (typically, BMW ATF or compatible synthetic fluid).
  • Check the fluid level with the dipstick and add fluid until it reaches the correct level.
5. Test the Transmission
  • Reconnect the battery.
  • Start the engine and allow it to idle.
  • Cycle through all the gears (P, R, N, D) to circulate the new fluid.
  • Check for leaks around the transmission pan and cooler.
