Solution
1. Preparation
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the engine is turned off.
  • Allow the engine to cool completely before starting work.
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
2. Coolant Level Check
  • Open the coolant reservoir cap carefully, using a cloth to avoid burns.
  • Add coolant to the appropriate level if low (use BMW-approved coolant mixed according to specifications).
3. Thermostat Replacement
  1. Remove the Engine Cover:
    • Use a socket set to remove any bolts securing the engine cover.
  2. Drain Coolant:
    • Place a drain pan under the radiator and open the drain valve to drain coolant.
  3. Remove Thermostat Housing:
    • Disconnect the hoses attached to the thermostat housing using pliers.
    • Unscrew the thermostat housing bolts and carefully lift it off.
  4. Install New Thermostat:
    • Ensure the new thermostat is oriented correctly and place it into the housing.
    • Reinstall the thermostat housing and tighten bolts to manufacturer specifications (typically around 10 Nm).
  5. Reconnect Hoses:
    • Reattach any hoses and secure them with clamps.
4. Water Pump Replacement (if necessary)
  1. Remove Drive Belt:
    • Use a socket wrench to relieve tension on the serpentine belt and remove it.
  2. Disconnect Water Pump:
    • Unscrew the bolts holding the water pump in place.
    • Carefully pull the water pump away from the engine block.
  3. Install New Water Pump:
    • Clean the mounting area, then position the new pump and secure it with bolts (torque to manufacturer specifications).
  4. Reattach Drive Belt:
    • Reinstall the serpentine belt over all pulleys and check for proper alignment.
5. Test and Refill Coolant
  • Fill the coolant reservoir to the appropriate level with the proper BMW coolant mixture.
  • Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature while checking for leaks.
