Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the ignition is off.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical hazards.
2. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Fluid
  • Remove the power steering fluid reservoir cap.
  • Use a turkey baster to extract old fluid from the reservoir.
  • Replace with new power steering fluid as per BMW specifications (typically ATF or hydraulic fluid).
  • Reattach the cap securely.
3. Replace Damaged Components

A. Control Arms and Bushings

  1. Raise the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.
  2. Remove the front wheels using a socket set.
  3. Unbolt the control arms from the chassis and the steering knuckle.
  4. Replace any worn bushings with new ones, ensuring proper alignment.
  5. Reinstall the control arms and torque to manufacturer specifications.

B. Steering Rack (if damaged)

  1. Disconnect the steering shaft from the steering rack.
  2. Unbolt the steering rack from its mounts.
  3. Remove the hydraulic lines, being careful to catch any fluid.
  4. Install the new steering rack in reverse order of removal, ensuring all connections are secure and torqued to specification.
4. Inspect and Replace Wheel Bearings (if necessary)
  1. Remove the wheel hub assembly by unbolting it from the steering knuckle.
  2. Pull out the old wheel bearing using a bearing puller.
  3. Press in the new wheel bearing using a hydraulic press.
  4. Reassemble the wheel hub and torque bolts to spec.
