Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, flat-head screwdriver, pry bar, fluid catch pan, O-ring pick, steering wheel puller (if needed).
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical hazards.
  • Raise the front of the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.
2. Remove the Old Steering Rack
  1. Drain Power Steering Fluid:

    • Place a fluid catch pan under the steering rack.
    • Remove the power steering reservoir cap and drain the fluid from the system.
  2. Disconnect the Steering Column:

    • Remove the plastic cover from the steering column.
    • Unscrew and disconnect the universal joint from the steering column to the steering rack.
  3. Detach Tie Rods:

    • Mark the position of the tie rod ends for alignment.
    • Remove the cotter pins and nuts from the tie rod ends.
    • Use a tie rod puller to detach the tie rods from the steering knuckles.
  4. Unbolt the Steering Rack:

    • Locate the mounting bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe.
    • Use the socket set to remove these bolts.
    • Carefully slide the steering rack out from its mounting position.
3. Install the New Steering Rack
  1. Position the New Steering Rack:

    • Align the new steering rack with the mounting points and slide it into place.
    • Install the mounting bolts hand-tight to hold it in position.
  2. Reconnect Tie Rods:

    • Attach the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
    • Install nuts and cotter pins as per the original alignment marks.
  3. Reconnect the Steering Column:

    • Reattach the universal joint to the steering rack.
    • Ensure all connections are secure and properly aligned.
  4. Secure the Steering Rack:

    • Torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 30-40 Nm, check specific torque values for your model).
4. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate fluid (check owner's manual for specifications).
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to purge air from the system. Recheck fluid levels and top off as necessary.
5. Final Checks
  • Reconnect the battery and check for any leaks around the steering components.
  • Lower the vehicle and perform a test drive to evaluate steering response.
