1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.

  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

  • Socket set (including 22mm or 7/8” socket)
  • Torque wrench
  • Multimeter
  • Oxygen sensor socket (if needed)
  • Safety goggles and gloves
2. Access the Oxygen Sensor
  • Locate the oxygen sensor. For the F30/F31, there are typically two sensors: pre-catalytic converter and post-catalytic converter.
  • Raise the vehicle using jack stands if necessary for better access.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector from the oxygen sensor by pressing the tab and pulling it apart.
3. Remove the Old Oxygen Sensor
  • Use the oxygen sensor socket or appropriate socket to unscrew the oxygen sensor from the exhaust pipe or manifold.
  • Turn counterclockwise until it is free. If it is stuck, apply penetrating oil and allow it to soak for a few minutes before attempting again.

6. Reconnect Battery and Clear Codes
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
