Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, screwdrivers, coolant catch pan, OBD-II scanner, thermometer.
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Allow the engine to cool completely before opening the hood.
    • Use gloves and safety glasses when handling coolant.
2. Replace Thermostat (if faulty)
  • Step 1: Drain Coolant

    • Place a coolant catch pan under the radiator and open the drain valve to let the coolant flow out.
  • Step 2: Remove Thermostat

    • Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
    • Locate the thermostat housing, remove the bolts using a socket set, and carefully take out the thermostat.
  • Step 3: Install New Thermostat

    • Clean the mating surfaces of the thermostat housing.
    • Place the new thermostat into the housing and secure it with bolts to the manufacturer’s torque specifications.
3. Replace Water Pump (if necessary)
  • Step 1: Remove Serpentine Belt

    • Use a wrench to loosen the tensioner pulley and remove the serpentine belt.
  • Step 2: Disconnect Water Pump

    • Remove any hoses connected to the water pump and unscrew it from the engine block using a socket set.
  • Step 3: Install New Water Pump

    • Position the new water pump in place and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer’s torque specifications.
    • Reattach hoses and ensure they are secure.
4. Refill Coolant
  • Step 1: Fill Cooling System

    • Use a mixture of BMW-approved coolant and distilled water to refill the cooling system through the reservoir.
  • Step 2: Bleed Cooling System

    • Run the engine with the radiator cap off to allow air bubbles to escape. Monitor the coolant level and add more as necessary.
