Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a flat surface and ensure the engine is cool.
  • Disconnect the battery to avoid electrical issues while working.
2. Locate the Leak
  • Tools Required: UV light, safety glasses.
  • Use the UV dye and add it to the power steering fluid. Run the engine and turn the steering wheel to circulate the fluid.
  • Use the UV light to inspect for any leaks throughout the system.
3. Replace Damaged Components
  • Hoses:

    1. Identify any damaged hoses.
    2. Use a socket set to disconnect the clamps.
    3. Remove the damaged hose and replace it with a new one.
    4. Secure the new hose with clamps and ensure there are no kinks.
  • Power Steering Pump:

    1. Remove the serpentine belt using a wrench to loosen the tensioner.
    2. Disconnect the power steering pump from the mounting brackets.
    3. Remove the pump from the vehicle and replace it with a new one.
    4. Reconnect the pump to its mounting brackets and reattach the serpentine belt.
  • Steering Rack:

    1. Locate the steering rack and inspect the seals.
    2. If leaking, consider replacing the entire steering rack or resealing it if feasible.
    3. Remove the steering rack from its mounting points and disconnect any necessary linkages.
    4. Install the new or resealed steering rack and secure it in place.
4. Refill and Bleed the System
  • Tools Required: Funnel, power steering fluid compatible with BMW specifications.
  • Fill the power steering fluid reservoir with the appropriate fluid.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to bleed air from the system.
  • Check the fluid level and top off as necessary.
