Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical issues during repairs.
2. Inspect and Replace Oxygen Sensors
  1. Locate the oxygen sensors:
    • Identify the upstream (pre-catalytic converter) and downstream (post-catalytic converter) oxygen sensors.
  2. Remove the sensors:
    • Use an oxygen sensor socket to carefully unthread the sensors from their respective locations.
    • Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  3. Install new sensors:
    • Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensors.
    • Thread the new sensors into place and connect the electrical connectors.
    • Torque to manufacturer's specification (usually around 30-40 Nm).
3. Inspect and Replace Catalytic Converter
  1. Remove the exhaust components:
    • Unbolt any clamps or bolts securing the exhaust to the catalytic converter.
    • Detach the exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter.
  2. Remove the catalytic converter:
    • Unbolt the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe.
  3. Install new catalytic converter:
    • Position the new catalytic converter in place and secure it with bolts to the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe.
    • Torque the bolts to manufacturer specifications (typically around 25-30 Nm).
  4. Reattach exhaust components:
    • Reinstall any clamps or hangers that were removed.
4. Clear Codes and Test Drive
  1. Reconnect the battery:
    • Ensure all connections are secure before reconnecting the battery.
  2. Clear diagnostic codes:
    • Use the OBD-II scanner to clear the P0420 code.
  3. Test drive the vehicle:
    • Drive the vehicle under various conditions to ensure the check engine light does not re-illuminate.
