Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts before starting.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
  • Disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on electrical components.
2. Replace Spark Plugs
  • Tools Required: Spark plug socket, torque wrench, ratchet.
  • Remove the engine cover if applicable.
  • Carefully disconnect the ignition coil connectors.
  • Use the spark plug socket to remove the old spark plugs.
  • Inspect the old spark plugs for wear and compare to specifications.
  • Install new spark plugs, torquing them to the manufacturer’s specifications (generally around 23 Nm for BMW).
  • Reconnect the ignition coils and engine cover.
3. Inspect and Replace Ignition Coils
  • Tools Required: Ratchet, torque wrench, possibly a multimeter.
  • Disconnect the battery again for safety.
  • Remove the ignition coils by unscrewing their bolts and gently pulling them out.
  • Test each ignition coil with a multimeter to ensure they are functioning correctly.
  • Replace any faulty ignition coils with new ones, ensuring they are properly seated.
  • Reconnect all electrical connectors and battery.
4. Fuel Injector Service
  • Tools Required: Fuel pressure gauge, injector cleaner, hand tools.
  • Disconnect the fuel pump fuse and start the engine to relieve fuel pressure, then turn off the engine.
  • Disconnect fuel injector connectors and remove the fuel rail if necessary.
  • Inspect fuel injectors for clogs; clean or replace if needed.
  • Reassemble the fuel rail and reconnect all electrical connectors.
  • Reinstall the fuel pump fuse and check for leaks.
5. Vacuum Leak Inspection
  • Tools Required: Smoke machine or carburetor cleaner.
  • Use a smoke machine to detect vacuum leaks in the intake system.
  • Alternatively, spray carburetor cleaner around intake gaskets and vacuum lines and watch for RPM changes.
  • Repair or replace any damaged components found during inspection.
