Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and safety equipment.
  • Tools Required:
    • Socket set
    • Torque wrench
    • Fluid catch pan
    • Rags for cleanup
    • Power steering fluid (manufacturer's recommended type)
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Allow engine to cool before starting work.
    • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Remove the Steering Rack
  • Lift the vehicle using a jack and secure it on jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels for better access.
  • Disconnect the steering column from the steering rack:
    1. Remove the retaining bolts using a socket set.
    2. Slide the steering column away from the rack.
  • Disconnect the power steering lines from the rack:
    1. Use a wrench to loosen and remove the high-pressure and return lines.
  • Remove any mounting bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe.
  • Carefully slide the steering rack out of its housing.
3. Inspect and Replace Seals
  • Inspect the steering rack for damage or excessive wear.
  • Use a seal kit compatible with the E90/E91 steering rack to replace worn seals:
    1. Remove the old seals and clean the surfaces.
    2. Install new seals as per the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Reassemble the steering rack and ensure all components are secured.
4. Reinstall the Steering Rack
  • Position the steering rack back into place in the subframe.
  • Secure the steering rack with the mounting bolts, tightening to the manufacturer's specified torque.
  • Reconnect the power steering lines, ensuring they are tight and free of leaks.
  • Reattach the steering column to the rack.
5. Refill and Bleed the Power Steering System
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate fluid.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to purge air from the system.
  • Check for leaks and top off the fluid if necessary.
