Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather required tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the battery to avoid electrical shorts.
2. Power Steering Fluid Inspection
  • Remove the power steering fluid reservoir cap.
  • Check fluid level; add manufacturer-recommended fluid if low.
  • Inspect fluid condition; if dark or contaminated, proceed to fluid replacement.
3. Power Steering Fluid Replacement
  • Place a fluid catch pan under the power steering pump.
  • Disconnect the return line from the pump and allow old fluid to drain.
  • Reconnect the return line securely.
  • Fill the reservoir with new, manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to bleed the system of air.
  • Check fluid level again and top off if necessary.
4. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Pump (if necessary)
  • If the pump is noisy or leaks, remove the drive belt by loosening the tensioner.
  • Detach the power steering lines from the pump.
  • Remove the mounting bolts and extract the pump from its bracket.
  • Install the new pump, torque the bolts to manufacturer's specifications, and reconnect the lines.
  • Reinstall the belt and tension to the proper specifications.
5. Steering Rack Inspection
  • If steering remains hard, inspect the steering rack for binding or damage.
  • If needed, replace the steering rack according to manufacturer specifications.
