Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts required for the repair.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical issues during repair.
2. Locate the Leak
  • Check the power steering fluid reservoir, hoses, and pump for leaks.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect hard-to-see areas and apply UV dye if needed.
3. Replace Damaged Components
  • If hoses are leaking:

    1. Use a socket set to remove the damaged hoses from both ends.
    2. Install new power steering hoses by securing them at both ends and tightening to manufacturer specifications (typically 15-20 Nm).
  • If the power steering pump is leaking:

    1. Remove the drive belt using a serpentine belt tool.
    2. Unbolt the pump from its mounting bracket and disconnect the fluid lines.
    3. Install the new pump by securing it and reconnecting the fluid lines.
    4. Reinstall the drive belt, ensuring proper tension.
  • If the steering rack is leaking:

    1. Support the vehicle on jack stands and remove the front wheels.
    2. Disconnect the tie rods from the steering rack.
    3. Unbolt the steering rack from the subframe and remove it.
    4. Install the new steering rack, securing it to the subframe and reattaching tie rods.
4. Refill and Bleed Power Steering System
  • Pour the recommended power steering fluid into the reservoir.
  • Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times with the engine off to remove air from the system.
  • Start the engine and check for any leaks, topping off fluid as necessary.
