Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Socket set
    • Screwdriver set
    • Power steering fluid
    • Rags for cleaning
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Disconnect battery before working on electrical systems.
    • Allow engine to cool before opening any fluid reservoirs.
2. Check and Refill Power Steering Fluid
  1. Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
  2. Remove the cap and check the fluid level; it should be between the minimum and maximum marks.
  3. If low, add the appropriate type of power steering fluid recommended for BMW vehicles.
  4. Replace the cap securely after filling.
3. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Pump (if necessary)
  1. If the whining noise persists, locate the power steering pump.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  3. Remove any belts connected to the power steering pump using the socket set.
  4. Disconnect the power steering lines from the pump, using a wrench to avoid damage.
  5. Remove the mounting bolts for the power steering pump and carefully take it out.
  6. Compare the old pump with the new one for compatibility, then install the new pump by reversing the removal steps.
  7. Reconnect the power steering lines and ensure they are tight.
4. Check and Replace Serpentine Belt (if required)
  1. Inspect the serpentine belt for cracks or wear.
  2. If damaged, use the socket set to release tension from the belt tensioner.
  3. Remove the old belt from the pulleys and replace it with a new one, ensuring proper routing.
  4. Release tension back onto the new belt.
